What Is Tax ID/EIN & Where Can I Find It?
What is a Tax ID/EIN?
Tax ID/EIN refers to the number the IRS uses to identify a business or organization for tax purposes.
EIN stands for Employer Identification Number — the specific number issued by the IRS to businesses, universities, and nonprofits.
Tax ID (short for Tax Identification Number, or TIN) is the more general term for this same number.
A Tax ID/EIN looks like this: XX-XXXXXXX (two digits, a dash, then seven digits — for example, 12-3456789).
Where can I locate this?
Here are the most common places to find it:
- Prior tax filings: Look at the top of a previously filed business tax return.
- Bank documents: Your business bank account paperwork often lists the EIN.
- Payroll documents: W-2s, 1099s, or payroll tax filings typically include it.
- Your finance, accounting, or HR department: If you're not the person who manages tax filings for your organization, this is usually the fastest way to get the number, someone in finance or accounting will have it on hand.
- IRS EIN lookup: If your organization is a nonprofit, you can also search the IRS's Tax Exempt Organization Search tool.
If you're unsure whether your organization has a Tax ID/EIN or can't track one down, reach out to your organization's finance or legal team, they'll be able to confirm it quickly.
Why are we asking for this?
We mainly require the Tax ID/EIN for whitelisting verification on our end. This helps ensure only legal businesses can sign up, and it prevents companies from accidentally creating duplicate accounts.
In short: it's a quick way for us to confirm your organization is a legitimate, registered entity, and to make sure your organization doesn't end up with multiple, disconnected accounts on our platform.
Your Tax ID/EIN is only used for this verification step, it is not used for billing, tax reporting, or shared outside of what's needed to confirm your account.
